Are you ready to embark on an adventure? To Learn To Control Our Mind

Dear readers. I am Kavya Budhiraja, and I extend a warm welcome back to ‘Being Krishna Conscious.’ Recently, I had the privilege of addressing a group of school students, ranging from the 5th to the 12th grade. During this enlightening session, I posed a rather intriguing question to these young minds:

The Enigma of Friendship and Enmity

“Who is your best friend?” The responses were as diverse as they were heartwarming. However, what followed was unexpected and immensely amusing.

The next question I presented was equally thought-provoking:

The Astonishing Revelation

“Who is your greatest enemy?” To my surprise, a young girl boldly named a boy, eliciting a burst of laughter from the audience. Yet, it was the third question that truly captivated everyone’s attention:

The Dual Nature of Our Closest Companion

“Who can simultaneously be your best friend and your fiercest enemy?” In essence, who possesses the unique ability to occupy both roles seamlessly?

As it turns out, this enigmatic figure is none other than our own MIND, a concept eloquently elucidated by Lord Krishna in the sacred Srimad Bhagavad-Gita. Let us delve into this profound revelation. According to ancient scriptures, our corporeal existence is comprised of three distinct layers. The first layer is our ‘gross body,’ composed of the five fundamental elements, the very form you perceive at this moment. This constitutes the first level.

The Three Levels of Our Existence

Ascending beyond this, we encounter the ‘subtle body,’ the second level, which consists of three integral facets:

The Mind – Our Inner Playground

‘man’ represents the Mind, ‘buddhi’ signifies Intelligence, and ‘ahankar‘ encompasses the realm of Ego. It is worth noting that ego, often mistaken for self-respect, warrants a discussion of its own, deserving separate exploration.

Moving to the pinnacle, the third level introduces us to the ‘spiritual soul,’ a transcendent entity. Now, let’s focus on ‘man’ and ‘buddhi,’ the Mind and Intelligence. To illustrate their distinction, consider this practical scenario:

The Battle Within – Mind vs. Intelligence

Imagine you have an impending exam, and your Intelligence urges you to study diligently due to your lack of comprehension during class. Yet, your Mind incessantly distracts you with Instagram scrolling and YouTube shorts, obstructing your path to productivity. Herein lies the disparity between Mind and Intelligence. While Intelligence discerns right from wrong and advocates for the former, the unruly Mind incessantly propels us towards unfavorable choices.

The Monkey Mind – A Restless Comparison

This tumultuous, unbridled Mind is often likened to a restless monkey, known for its inability to remain still for even a brief moment. It perpetually leaps from one thought to another, mirroring the relentless nature of our own mental chatter. Those from India, especially those born in the 90s, may recall the “madari dance” from their childhood, in which a performer, the madari, orchestrates the dance of monkeys. Astonishingly, he commands not one, but multiple monkeys, guiding them to dance harmoniously to his rhythmic beats.

The Key to Control – Training the Mind

This prompts a profound inquiry: How does the madari manage to control these inherently unruly creatures? The answer is found in the process of training. The madari employs a systematic approach, a technique tailored to tame the wild instincts of these monkeys. Consequently, we discern that the key to controlling the untamed Mind lies in the realm of training.

The Path to Mastery – Chanting the Divine Names

Now, you may wonder: What specific training or technique should we adopt to gain mastery over our Mind? In the age of Kali Yuga, the answer is elegantly simple. It is not an arduous journey of asceticism, elaborate rituals, or sacrifices. Rather, it is the sublime act of chanting the holy names of Krishna that holds the power to rein in our restless minds. In the age we inhabit, there exists no alternative path, no parallel route.

The Divine Mantra – Your Vehicle to Spiritual Realms

The only way to discipline the Mind is through the mellifluous repetition of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. However, when confronted with a myriad of mantras and divine names, one may ponder which path to embrace. To address this quandary, let me present an analogy.

Choosing the Expedited Path

Suppose you must embark on a journey to a distant destination, and you are offered two modes of transportation: a conventional bus and a modern airplane. Which would you choose? Naturally, the airplane, for its swiftness and comfort far surpass the conventional bus. Similarly, if you possess multiple mantras that ultimately lead to the same divine goal—Krishna—opt for the one that expedites your journey and guarantees a comfortable voyage.

The Tarak Brahma Mantra – The Key to Liberation

This mantra, often referred to as the ‘Tarak Brahma Mantra,’ comprises sixteen potent syllables. Its efficacy is such that it obviates the need for alternative means of transport on the journey from the material world to the spiritual realm. Hence, it is aptly christened the ‘Tarak Brahma Mantra.’

Embrace the Path – Chant and Transform

In conclusion, the art of taming our restless minds lies in the simple act of chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. It serves as the vessel that transports us from our mundane existence to the spiritual realm of Krishna Prem. As you embark on this transformative journey, pour your heart and soul into each chant. Your sincere devotion and earnest efforts will surely attract the benevolent gaze of Lord Krishna, guiding you towards a life of fulfillment and spiritual enlightenment.

Commence Your Journey Today

Begin your chanting practice today and share your profound experiences with me. Together, let us seize this moment and align our lives with the sublime resonance of Krishna’s divine names.
